History
Seneca was originally founded as Seneca City, named for a Native American village in the area and the Seneca River. Seneca was situated at the intersection of the Blue Ridge Railroad and the Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line Railroad, which are now part of the Norfolk Southern Railway. Two engineers for the Air Line Railroad purchased the land from Colonel Brown of Anderson, South Carolina. The land was divided into one-mile lots stemming from a stake driven into the center of the railroad intersection, which marked the center of town. The town held an auction on August 14, 1873 and Seneca City received a charter on March 14, 1874. It wasn’t until 1908 that the town’s name was changed to Seneca.
Seneca became a prominent marketing and shipping point for cotton, and eventually, a passenger terminal, a number of hotels, and a park — now called Norton-Thompson Park — were built near the railroad tracks. Several textile mills were also erected in Seneca and most have since closed their doors.
The town saw significant growth with the construction of Lake Hartwell in 1963, Lake Keowee in 1971, and Lake Jocassee in 1974.
