History
The name Concord means “with harmony”, a principle upon which the city was founded in 1796. County officials searched for a place to form Cabarrus County’s seat, spurring a two-year debate between the German and Scots-Irish settlements. The two groups compromised, and the county seat was placed on a 26-acre tract near the old Indian Trading Path, located just west of Three Mile Branch.
Ten years later, the settlement was incorporated and the town saw rapid growth thereafter. By 1839, the first cotton mill opened where Locke Mill Plaza currently stands. After a few years, 50 employees were manufacturing shirts and cotton yarn. Like many towns in the Carolinas, the cotton industry led to a demand for a railroad depot to transport goods in and out of town.
