Lifestyle and Attractions
With a population of approximately 25,000 in 2015, Mauldin has seen steady growth over the years and is expected to increase even more in years to come. Additionally, the city is seeing steady business growth, as several companies are moving headquarters to Mauldin. The community is a mostly residential area, with a small collection of shops and restaurants at its center. However, residents may access the many attractions and amenities of Greenville just a short drive away.
Mauldin is home to the Mauldin Sports Center, a state-of-the-art center with a 12,800-square-foot gym, a rock climbing wall, and an indoor walking track. The sports center complements the city’s four public parks, including Sunset Park with baseball diamonds, picnic shelters, a walking trail, and more. The Mauldin Cultural Center hosts an array of classes and events open to the community, and is home to the historic Gosnell Cabin built in the early 1800s. Residents may travel approximately 2.5 miles west from the center of Mauldin to access Lake Conestee Nature Park, a 400-acre woodland oasis of forests and wetlands along the Reedy River. History
The first land grant in Mauldin was awarded to Benjamin Griffith in 1784. In 1820, the city of Mauldin was named for William L. Mauldin, who used his political clout as lieutenant governor of South Carolina to convince the Greenville Laurens Railroad Company to reroute its line through the village instead of bypassing it. Today, the tracks run through the heart of the city, passing directly in front of the Mauldin Cultural Center. The city became a ghost town during the Civil War, as most citizens left town to fight, and the city was officially incorporated in 1969.
